Warning! Only under adult supervision.

Equipment

  • beets;
  • spinach;
  • tomato paste;
  • water;
  • spaghetti.

Step-by-step instructions

In separate cups, blend beets, spinach, and tomato paste with water. Filter out the beet and spinach pulp. Cook some spaghetti in the resulting colored water – it turns different colors!

Process description

Beets, spinach, and tomato paste contain natural dyes: betanin, chlorophyll, and lycopene. When heated, the dye molecules get “stuck” in the spaghetti’s structure. This tints the spaghetti different colors! It’s a healthy meal for your future scientists!
