Reagents and equipment
- glass bowl;
- 4 tbsp baking soda;
- 3 tbsp citric acid;
- 2 tbsp sea salt;
- 1 tbsp dried chamomile;
- 1 tbsp mint;
- lemon and orange zest;
- 1 tsp olive oil.
Step-by-step instructions
Combine the baking soda, citric acid, sea salt, dried chamomile, and mint in a glass bowl. Mix thoroughly and shape into spheres using a mold or by hand. All that’s left is to toss it in water and enjoy your carbonated bath!
Process description
Soda and citric acid react in water to release carbon dioxide.
С₆Н₈О₇ + 3NaHCO₃ –> Na₃C₆H₅O₇ + 3CO₂ + 3H₂O
As carbon dioxide doesn’t dissolve in water, it bubbles out, first appearing on the surface of the “bomb” and then in the bath. The essential oils in the lemon and orange zest lift the mood. Chamomile and mint have antibacterial properties and soothe the skin. Olive oil creates a thin film on the surface of the skin that helps it retain moisture.
