(NH2)2CO – urea – is a colorless, odorless, water-soluble crystalline substance also known as carbamide. Urea is utilized as a nitrogen-release fertilizer. It is also used as a moisturizing ingredient in some skin creams, hair conditioners, and shampoos. It is a normal component of our blood and many body tissues. Ammonia (a highly toxic substance) is converted to urea (much less toxic) in the liver. Most of the urea produced is then removed from the blood by the kidneys and eliminated from the body in urine.
