How to cool a drink with salt

  • salt;

  • ther­mome­ter.

Step-by-step in­struc­tions

Mix crushed ice and salt in a glass con­tain­er. Place your drink in the “ice bath” and ob­serve its quick cool­ing!

Process de­scrip­tion

Cool­ing mix­tures are sys­tems of two or more sub­stances, the mix­ing of which leads to the ab­sorp­tion of heat ac­com­pa­nied by a tem­per­a­ture de­crease. The process in which heat is ab­sorbed from the en­vi­ron­ment is called an en­dother­mic process. A 3:1 cool­ing mix­ture of ice and salt can get down to a tem­per­a­ture of about -21°C. To do this, it is best to use fine­ly ground ice and salt to in­crease sur­face con­tact.
