Inky hearts that float on water

Every kid wants their drawing to come alive and play – and this is easy to achieve with one simple trick! Check it out in our video!

Safety precautions

None.

Equipment

  • dry erase marker;
  • plate;
  • water.

Step-by-step instructions

Use a whiteboard marker to draw a picture on a plate. Let dry for 1 minute, then pour water on it. Observe as the picture floats on the surface of the water!

Process description

The whiteboard marker contains special substances that prevent its ink from clinging to smooth surfaces, such as whiteboards or plates. When water is added, its molecules make their way under the drawing, which pops up. And since the ink is both insoluble in and less dense than water, the drawing floats easily on its surface.
