Warning! Only under adult supervision.

Equipment

  • dishes;
  • new needleless syringe;
  • 4 g (1.5 tsp) edible sodium alginate and 20 g (6–7 tsp) calcium lactate;
  • 300 mL (10.2 fl oz) water;
  • 100 mL (3.4 fl oz) soda;
  • blender.

Step-by-step instructions

Blend 4 g (1.5 tsp) sodium alginate with 100 mL (3.4 fl oz) water. Add 100 mL (3.4 fl oz) soda and blend again. Dissolve 20 g (6–7 tsp) calcium lactate in 200 mL (6.8 fl oz) of water and transfer to a bowl. Fill a needleless syringe with the solution of sodium alginate and soda, and squeeze it into the calcium lactate solution in the bowl – this creates an edible jello-like worm with soda inside.

Process description

When the sodium alginate and calcium lactate solutions mix, they instantly form a new insoluble jello-like compound, calcium alginate, yielding elastic tubes resembling worms.
