Let’s make candy slime – an edible toy!

Safety precautions

Perform this experiment only under adult supervision.

Equipment

  • gummy bears;
  • glass bowl;
  • 1:1 mixture of starch and powdered sugar;
  • water bath.

Step-by-step instructions

Pour some gummy bears into a glass bowl and melt them in a water bath. Gradually add a mixture of starch and powdered sugar, stirring often, until the gummy substance turns into slime!

Process description

Gummy bears contain mostly gelatin and glucose syrup. Gelatin is a dietary supplement derived from collagen. It is used as a thickener or gelling agent in food products, medicines, and cosmetics. Gummy bears also contain glucose syrup, which can consist of up to 43% glucose. When the marmalade bears are heated, they melt to form a viscous, sticky mass. When the starch and powdered sugar are introduced to the mixture, their particles stick to the gelatin and glucose syrup, reducing the adhesive properties of the mass and turning it into elastic candy mega-slime!
