Making dyes dance for the winter holidays

The dyes seem to come to life!

Warning! Only under adult supervision.

Equipment

  • milk;
  • dish soap;
  • plate;
  • cookie cutter;
  • food coloring.

Step-by-step instructions

Set a cookie cutter on a plate and pour some milk onto the plate. Then, add food coloring and a drop of dish soap. The dyes seem to come to life!

Scientific description

Soap lowers milk’s surface tension and spreads over its surface, making the milk itself move. Thus, the dyes start to “dance”! This is such a cute experiment for a merry winter break!

A similar experiment is included in the “Colorful chemistry” set from the MEL Science subscription!
